Passive Solar Heat & the First SNOW!

IMGP4415Monday night was exciting up here! We saw first sleet and then snow falling, and it snowed all night.

As some of you may know, I’ve been recording precipitation data for the CoCoRAHS project since 1998, at the seven addresses I have lived at in that time. Yesterday’s reading was particularly difficult because of high winds and drifted snow, although I did record almost an inch of precip!

Let me put it this way, it was difficult getting out of the house on Tuesday morning. Some places there was almost no snow and it was a foot deep elsewhere. We live on a county road so they took care of the road plowing.

And our solar heating has been working great! For example, outside we got down to around 20 degrees last night and inside we were around 60 this morning, but as soon as the sun started coming in, we jumped up to 66 quickly. We do have supplemental electric heat, which we use sparingly, and I also have hot flashes, which help a lot!

IMGP4413The sunset was beautiful here last night, a constant reminder of why we choose to live up here!

A New Best of Boomer Blogs just for YOU!

What have I been doing? Loving life in our new home in the foothills, whenever I can get out of my own way.

Compulsive behavior takes over for both Mike and I when we move into a new space. We have been overdoing it for the past few weeks, and it’s catching up with us!

IMGP3990That’s where the incredible beauty of this place comes in. Check out our sunset last night over the Spanish Peaks, a real attention-grabber!

IMGP3994Every time I look outside I am AMAZED at where I live.

But enough about me, what have the rest of my fellow bloggers been up to?

On The Survive and Thrive Boomer Guide, Rita R. Robison, consumer journalist, writes about an Ohio couple who weren’t allowed to have a natural lawn. The St. Albans Township threatened to send someone to mow the lawn accompanied by the police. The couple compromised and used a scythe to cut the height of their lawn down to 8 inches, hoping that would give them time to figure out some other solution. Robison, who’s written about “freedom lawns,” thinks its O.K. to let your lawn turn in to a meadow.

Tom Sightings invites you to see if you can figure out which ’60s icon he’s talking about … before the big reveal. Hint: He’d be the same age as Bob Dylan and Bernie Sanders. Go on over and try it out at Remember Me?

This week Meryl Baer of Six Decades and Counting visited the town she lived in for over 30 years and was pleasantly surprised. The city is experiencing a renaissance and reawakening, a previously neglected center city coming to life. Read her observations in Revisiting My Hometown.

Here’s to having a great new week out there!

Our home will be “dried-in” soon!

OK, back to this week’s progress on our solar home…

IMGP3245This week our home became almost completely dried-in. This means the building shell is sufficiently completed to keep out the weather.  As you can see, the roof is now completely covered with weather sealing, and the windows are going in.

The steel roof happens next week…

We love the HURD windows Mike chose for the house! He remembered seeing them in new construction while growing up in California, so he checked them out for quality and price when we started construction.

Mike found Hurd to be the best deal while looking for windows whose parts are pressure-treated with preservatives so they will not rot later. He’s had some bad experiences with some of the better-known national brands and refuses to use them ever again!

When the windows and doors are all in, we will begin on the electrical and plumbing. The insulation and interior dry walling come next.

IMGP3252The East Spanish Peak was peeking out of the clouds in a lovely, Taoist way…

Time to get to work ordering the kitchen cabinets.
