You belong somewhere you feel free…

“You belong among the wildflowers. You belong in a boat out at sea.  Sail away, kill off the hours. You belong somewhere you feel free…”

Go listen to this song: Wildflowers by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Are you familiar with this song? I wasn’t until I moved to rural Colorado last summer, and our new landlord Bob put it on one his recordings for us. Since then it has become my mantra for choosing to leave suburbia behind forever and live in nature.

IMGP4000This is the first time in my entire life that I have felt truly free, and why not with a view like this out of my picture window?

IMGP4008It admit, it has taken me longer than I ever expected to adjust to life in and then outside of small town USA, but now I cannot even imagine going back to suburbia with all of that noise, pollution, traffic and high anxiety.

I didn’t even know how unhappy and anxious I was until I left it all behind.

An undeniable peace…

Our mountain retreat is a DREAM COME TRUE. We’re both completely exhausted, and yet quite pleased with the result of our two years of change, stress and labor…

The view from our bed through the sliding door:

IMGP3935You just have to love those resilient sunflowers!

I see some serious cloud-watching in our future…

My MOST stressful year is almost over!

Surprise, surprise I found our builder out there this morning BEFORE 8 AM! I guess he just figured out we are moving in, in a few days! Time to get the stove in…

I was VERY DISAPPOINTED to find out my entire counter will not be finished until after we move in. And guess what? He won’t get paid until that’s finished either…

I have been trying not to totally stress over these final days, but I would say it’s not working… I am having daily meltdowns lately.

Poor Mike, perhaps this wasn’t the year to get off my estrogen patch.  🙂

IMGP3926At least Kristy helped me get my fancy bath back splash done this week! I planned the whole bath around the colors in that tin lavender sign, and I’m really happy with the results! This photo doesn’t show the colors exactly how they look.

IMGP3919And on another positive note, the native sunflowers are numerous this July. Check out the view out of our front door.

IMGP3923This is the view back towards the front door. I have to remind myself daily that all of this stress will pass, and then we will be set for some SERIOUS rest and relaxation!

A day in the life of small town USA

This morning was glorious here in Walsenburg. It was around 60 degrees with a nice cool breeze blowing, so I took a walk. I found a lovely set of hollyhocks a few blocks away…

IMGP3816so nice  I had to share them with you. There’s lots of hollyhocks here! They remind me of growing up in a small town in Kansas. Walsenburg is basically very small town and traffic-free except for Main Street and Highway 160 headed west. Most people never get off the main drag and see what a friendly town this can be.

IMGP3834Then we took a drive over to La Veta to visit our friends at Two Fox Cabins. Pat and Doug beautifully maintain this best place in the area to stay! They have a way with wildflowers, and they are constantly improving their place for visitors, so much so that they’re full for most of the rest of the summer.

On the way back from La Veta we stopped off at our almost finished new home in the foothills.

IMGP3839I just had to share the view from our new front door! We now have the first layer of stucco on and on Monday they will finish it with an adobe-colored finish. Can’t wait!

IMGP3842It was looking so glorious up there that I had to take another photo of the Sangre de Cristo mountains in the distance.

IMGP3846Inside, my custom bathroom is looking wonderful! I chose white marble tile with mint green walls, with green and purple glass highlights in the shower and on the backsplash. What do you think? This is the first time in my life I got to choose everything myself… What FUN!

The trials and tribulations of building a custom home in rural Colorado…

IMGP3715So we’re back with our original builder, who is supposedly finishing our home. Two weeks later he hasn’t even begun to finish tiling our small home.

Excruciatingly slow progress!  And please don’t say hire someone else. There is no one else available around here! We were supposed to be in there by now, one year after we moved here to build. We did our research and chose the best builder we could find here, so WTF?

Please note the steam coming out of my ears at this point….  In the meantime, I am trying very hard to stay zen about my circumstances, as my husband awaits possible neurosurgery, and our home does not move forward.

IMGP3698Because of all the extra rainfall we have received here (over 10 inches since the middle of April!), the wildflowers are going WILD up near our new home!

IMGP3696Especially these yellow flowers called Plains Greenthread (or Navajo Tea), but we also have Indian Paintbrush, Lupines and a couple Penstemons around.

IMGP3706Just had to share these amazing fields! Who knows when they’ll be like this again…
